CLAUDIA VIEIRA
Born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, Claudia Vieira lives and works in New York City. She studied Fine Arts at the Universidade Federal, Brazil, New York Studio School, The International School of Art, Italy and holds an MFA from Pratt Institute, NY.
The artist's projects has been exhibited in the US, Europe, South America and Asia in venues including the Queens Museum of Art, the Rotunda Gallery and El Museo del Barrio, in NYC; the Kuntlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin; the Museum of Modern Art, in Brazil and the Kyoto Arts Center, in Japan. She has received various awards including the XlV Salão da Bahia from the Museum of Modern Art, in Brazil; the Projecteils Contemporary Art Prize, from FUNARTE/the Brazilian Ministry of Culture as well as the Urban Artists Initiative from NYFA/ New York Foundation for the Arts, in the U.S.
Vieira has pursued drawing in a way that directly interferes in the landscape, both natural and constructed, creating immersive drawn environments in which the action of drawing is as important as the final form of the work. In a manner that is subtle and yet intense her site-specific installations share with the public the actual reality of each lived moment. Time is experienced as a dimension of space and consciousness.
For the past twenty years, she has been exploring how our sense of space and time can be transformed through the tracing of one continuos line that appears constantly in her work, defining her entire practice. Each project is just a section of an ongoing trajectory integrating visual form, experience and architecture.
Ultimately, Vieira is interested in exploring, blurring and exploiting the old dialectical separations between reality and imagination, visible and invisible, inside and outside, and particularly, self and other.
